M46 OD problems..engages if I hold the shift lever down by hand...calling OD GURU 200 1983

This is a Shout-out to OD GURU...I recently replaced the whole M46 on which I had rebuilt the OD as per your instructions several years ago, the problem with this one was a groaning first gear. It is stored in air conditioned comfort.

The used M46/OD I installed will not engage the OD unless I wiggle, then hold down the shift lever in the 4th gear position.
Is there some adjustment I could make? Do I need to Frankenstein the trannies?
Please, O OD GURU,let me know.
