S U Carb Problems. 444-544

I've owned numerous cars with twin SU's over the years, and have always known how to balance, center the jets and adjust them, but this has me stumped. Recently I tried to help out a friend with a newly aquired '63 544 which was running well {though very rich!)with the choke jets jammed full open.
I re-aligned the retaing brackets, got the chokes working, and set the usual adjustments. The carbs balanced out fine - then the trouble began!
On the road it died- not getting gas to the carbs - turned out to be a bad fuel pump.
A new on was fitted today. Engine would not run - very little gas reaching the carbs - so fed fuel pump from gas can,and it pumped fine, but engine would run very poorly at idle and had little suction to lift the dash pots.
I took the oil out of the dash pots, re-centered the jets and adjusted the chokes- it got a little better, but runs rough and dies.
I'm at my wits end! Any Ideas?
