How do you know that the diff is gone? 200

Do you just remove the diff plate and see that the gears are stripped and there are lots of filings?

(Jorrell mentioned his diff stopped transmiting torque. Can that be an intermittant problem that could be confused with transmission problems or is it a "once it goes, it's gone" situation?)
