shift assembly, ignition assembly, 240 200 1993

I tried to search for this problem - I have a '93 240 - and I'm in New Orleans, away from the Volvo owners and mechanics I usually rely on.

6 weeks ago I put the automatic transmission shift assembly into Park. At that point, I think the shift assembly broke. I couldn't get the shifter out of Park. I couldn't start the car -- couldn't even turn the key. The shiftlock override did nothing. So I had the car towed to the gas station down the street -- who had just fixed a wheel problem quickly, well and inexpensively.

They started to replace the shift assembly. But they said I needed another piece to connect to the shift assembly. And they still couldn't get the car started. I did a little research for them and determined that the problem was probably the ignition assembly's antitheft device engaging. (with a hope-to-heaven idea that it could be the key, and i should get volvo to cut another one.)

After a month, they said they couldn't do anything more for me. I had to buy the shifter assembly; after 4 other places said they couldn't work on old volvos, I took the car to a place in Harvey, LA. They still haven't even looked at it.

Has anyone out there had a similar problem? I can't imagine that this is as difficult a problem as they're making it out to be, but I haven't got the experience to know how to solve it. What kinds of questions should I ask? And does anyone know a good volvo mechanic in New Orleans?

Molly
