A/C charging help... 900

So,

I finally got a can of R12. Started the car and placed the a/c into full blast. The compressor was clicking on and off about every 3 sec. Place the charge hose into the low port and opened up the valve. AFter about a minute the compressor stopped cycling on and off and it's just completely ON. My question is..what is the normal amount of time should I keep the can hooked up on the low side? I'm asking because my car didn't the entire can..it feels like it's about half way full. Is this normal? How long should I keep charging the car..10 minutes, 30 or an hour?? Thanks!
