A moment of stupidity and potential ruin?
Last weekend I had to change the oil/filter in one of my other 240's. Since I had planned to travel ~220miles at highway speed (75-80mph) I decided to change the oil/filter on my '93 244 M47. I have only used Mobil 1 Synthetic and Mann filters and change every 3k. Since I was only 500 miles short I decided to change early and get it done.
Well, in a moment of stupidity after all was done I recheched the oil level and added a few ounces to the fill line. GUESS WHAT I FORGOT TO REPLACE THE OIL CAP and left it on the front sill. Yesterday I drove the 220miles at 75-80mph. When I was nearly at my end destination the oil pressure idiot light began to flicker and when I slowed down it stayed on. I pulled over and checked and blurted our ############## ##@# etc. Oil was covering the entire engine bay.
The level was none existant on the "dip" stick. I guess I will be nicknamed DIP STICK from now on. I had a few quarts to add just to get some lube in and finished the last 5 miles with a knot in my stomach and repeating how much an idiot I am.
Funny thing that the engine temp never moved from below mid point. I have added new oil and the engine sounds pretty much the same with perhaps a slight more noise ( maybe my immagination) The head was hot, hotter to the touch than I have felt before. So I am wondering if I may have cooked the engine or what damage I have done.
Anyone out there willing to admit the same and if so what was the result.
COMMENTS?
I just hope that I caught this just in time before damage occured.
I guess I was lucky in that only fresh Moblil 1 was in the sump and that the front cam lobe spit off the oil grudually. There is no apparant burning of the cam lobe or any visiable damage.
If you get a laugh it is on me, the DIP STICK!!! A Stupid moment of memory loss!
