Noisy M47 gearbox downhill 700 1986

When driving downhill my gearbox sometimes makes a rattling sound. I think this only happens in 5th gear, but i'm not sure. The rattle seems to be in time with the shaking of the gearstick. I can stop the rattle by pulling the gearstick slightly towards the neutral position while in 5th gear. Should I worry about this? Are there any simple things I can check without removing the gearbox?

The only suggestion the haynes manual gives me is "worn gear teeth". I don't think this could be the problem if I can stop the rattle by pulling the gearstick inwards.

Cheers
Will
