'85 245 Turbo - CA replacement VIN, other questions 200 1985

My local donation lot just took in an '85 Turbo wagon. Mileage 160,000, automatic, no visible defects.

Fitst question. On the door jamb is a plate which inicates it is a California Replacement VIN, together with a number. Does anyone have any idea why a car would have a replacement VIN?

Anything in particular to look for on an '85 Turbo. The automatic worries me. It seems to operate OK, but it is a donation lot. Test drives are limited to a tour of the parking lot.
