Weird steering problem 200 1976

If the 76 PS system is similar to an 89, your steering rack is shot... sorry for the bad news. This failure normally starts with it being easier to steer in one direction rather than the other and eventually the steering wheel moves on its own while sitting still. Don't get me wrong, this can be a serious safety situation as I have been told by local shops that a failed rack or incorrectly reassembled rack can snap the steering wheel out of your hands. Sorry, don't have data to support the extreme situation, just personal experience on a slowly failing rack.
