Home-Brew Battery Cables for 700 series 700

I have the typical fried end on the positive battery cable for my 86 745. Right now, I've managed to fit a tractor-trailer universal cable end to both cables. BUT it seems to have added lots of resistance and the gauge on my engine analyzer shows only 12.8 Volts coming into the battery and 13.8 coming directly out of the (last month) rebuilt 80 amp Bosch alternator.
I've looked at the wiring diagrams and see that the cables (2 of them at $40 apiece from FCPGroton) go to the starter and another to the ICU.
Could I just get 2 long red cables from a local auto parts house and cobble something that will work?
Of course, like Rob (the New England Volvo guru) says...INSULATE! the cable as it goes under the engine.
Will this work??

A shout out to AyeRoll....I'll be driving up with the 93 245 to NYC from Texas again to deliver daughter's cats (too scaredy-cat to fit into the U-Haul).
gracias,
el raidman
