1990 740T auto:
I reported a very low idle (about 500rpm) and overheating symptoms yesterday. I thought it was due to an inoperative A/C fan - but I repaired the relay's solder joints and the fan now works.
With the low idle came a strange glowing of some of my dash lights - ABS SRS Batt and more. This morning, before I fixed the relay, the ABS light came on in a parking lot. I switched the car into neutral, off and on, and kept driving. No problem.
Lately, I've been noticing a seemingly overactive kickdown cable, but I know the adjustment cable is extended as far as I want it, nearly fully lengthened and not clicking until WOT.
On the way back to my friend's house tonight, I gave it some gas and was met with:
1)no kickdown
2) no acceleration
So, I pushed harder:
I got:
1) Kickdown
2) bog down
3) slow down!
I thought that was odd and something might happen soon since all this crazy stuff is going on at once. Soon after this (before the next light) I noticed my ABS light was on again.
I pulled up to the next light and just before I stopped (in case it didn't start), I kicked it into neutral and switched it off and when I tried to restart it I got:
CLIXXXXXXXX CLIXXXXXX
like I had a dead battery.
I pulled off the road with the little momentum I had and stopped. I put it in park, tried to start it and got more clicking like the spark wasn't making it all the way. The starter motor was not turning and the tach wasn't moving.
I sat for a minute, shocked that my brick could leave me stuck. I called my parents to pick me up (I'm 19 and going to JC, so I live with them. Sue me.) and bring jumper cables on the off chance it was that.
While I was waiting, I tried to start it again and got very slow RRrrRRrr from the starter motor. Sounded like a dead battery. The radio, lights, etc. all worked. I turned on my flashers and radio for a few minutes to see what I could see. When the flashers cycled on, the radio lost power, it came back on, then off continuing. Eventually, the flashers seemed to take longer between on and off cycles.
I waited for my parents to arrive, checked my self-diagnostic codes:
4-3-1 and 1-3-2
Batt voltage too low/high and EGR signal missing. Ignore the EGR code, that's been there.
So, it appeared to be the battery/charging system.. but when they arrived and attempted to jump start the car, nothing happened. The car sort of growled for a second as the starter sluggishly turned, but soon, it degenerated to more clicking.
I have to get my brother from work now, maybe I'll leave early.
I believe the ignition amp unit might be to blame, but I'm going to try all the self-diagnostics

listed there.
Now, the jumper cables were VERY rusty, I had a clean pair, but they didn't see them and grabbed the gnarly ones. I'll take them too.
