That's what I was going to suggest - if you're spewing oil, it could just be too much pressure from a clogged flame trap or something.

And I would think it would spew oil out of the hole behind the valve cover long before it would come from the oil filler cap.

In any case, unless the car has serious sentimental value or is in PERFECT condition other than the engine, it ain't worth $2000 to rebuild. Buy another with a trashed body and swap doors/body panels maybe or buy another engine and have that dropped in - should be much cheaper than $2000.
