older 240 automatic tranmission analysis anyone? 200 1986

My 1986 Brick wagon, automatic, drives and runs great on what I believe to be original engine and tranny, and still gets 30 mpg on the freeway. It's got 220,000 miles, but the tranny appears to be weakening, in the past few months seeming to have a more pronounced thud or bump as it does the upshift between 1st and 2nd, on the automatic tranny. Otherwise tranny seems fine. It leaks a little fluid, so I keep it checked and at the right level.
What can I do? What can I expect? Are there any adjustments to be made?
Thanks everyone!
