I've got a 1994 940 Turbo with about 165K on it. Last night I heard a noise under the hood like I had run over some gravel (even though I was on pavement) or something like that, that banged against the underside of the car. At that point some of the panel lights lit up (service, battery, lights (!), brake, ABS and Park Brake) but nothing seemed wrong aside from that. I turned around to see what I had run over (or what had fallen out from under my engine) and saw no evidence on the road so I drove home. I turned the car off and cranked it a few times and it seemed fine aside from needing a little gas to get the engine to idle, which is fairly normal with my car.
So this morning it cranked easily but all the lights were on still. At that point I noticed some "symptoms"...the air compressor wouldn't kick on so I tried to open the sunroof, it went back but then wouldn't close again. As I drove, the panel lights got gradually dimmer and the radio lost power. When I got to work I cut the engine and tried to recrank ang got NOTHING. No clicking, no half turning over, dead flat. So I opened the hood and looked but I don't know much. Looks to me like there is a pulley on the alternator that has no belt attached to it...but for all I know it's supposed to be that way. The main belt under there looks good to me but it does appear that nothing is attached to the alternator.
What do you guys think?
***EDIT***
Well now that you've read all of the above...I went out to take a photo to include and lookee what I found by the light of day sitting on top of my splash guard...a shredded up piece of belt (I placed it on top of the radiator so you could see it in the photo...it wasn't sitting there). How much should I expect to pay to have this fixed?
Thanks,
Josh Grantham
