Replace tranny and clutch, improve mpg? 700 1990

I posted a while ago about some issues I had with the M46 in my 1990 745T. I recently decided to go ahead and replace it with a used tranny. It turned out the clutch also needed to be replaced.

I took the car out for its first big trip over the weekend: NYC to Catskills and back. I filled it up yesterday, and unless I made some major miscalculation, I used a little under 11 gallons of gas over a little more than 315 miles. Previously, I was stuck around 25-26 mpg on the highway.

Is it possible that the "new" tranny and clutch could make that much of a difference?

Joe
