Doesn't sound like a rear axle problem.
Sounds like your first gear in the trani is slipping.

The rear axle is all gears, if the engine is rev'd and you are slowly accelerating, it's because Power is not getting to the Rear.
Since you said it 's fine when it goes intoi second gear, I think that confirms that it isn't the rear end.
