Front End Clunks (???) 200

1987 240 DL station Wagon in need of a diagnosis.
Clunk is sporadic and comes in when I take off and as the wheel turns.. not as a result of suspension up and down. How does one know where the "Clunk" is coming from. . How do I pinpoint this problem? I know it's not the strut or ball joint as I've tried to reproduce the noise by pushing the car up and down as when one is testing the struts and suspension and the noise is not there.
