Symptoms: most of the time everything seems OK then at higher (freeway) speeds the car will hesitate or miss and then resume. Sometimes it happens a few quick short times and then resumes; other times it happens once an then is OK. I recently had a similar problem on a long 800 mile journey. The Car experienced the same or similar symptoms a few times while driving at speed: just a quick "miss" or hesitation, so short my wife did not notice, but I did. Finally, when approaching the freeway on city streets - 30 mph - during same trip the car hesitated a few times quickly in succession and then - I knew this was it - it died. I diagnosed a faulty fuel pump relay, replaced it and car worked fine. (That's the short version of the story; it cost me $600 in futile shop fees and renting a trailer to haul it home.)
Three months later - now - I had similar symptoms on another trip. The car hesitated a few times rapidly in succession, but did not die. I pulled over and the car kept running, so I canceled my trip and drove home. I replaced the FP relay again and...it keeps hesitating just a little every now and again. It's just often enough to let me know that there is a problem and that some day, when I'm cruising along at 70mph, the car will die and I'll be in trouble.
I thought perhaps a loose ground wire at the fuel pump but checked it, cleaned it and tightened it down - it was very clean anyway - and I still get the little reminder "miss" every few days. I'm thinking one of several things: fuel filter or ground connection or some other electrical buggery. The flywheel pulse cable is only 10,000 old and I get no diagnostic codes at all.
By the way, I had a nasty problem - same car - a year and a half ago and was able to get enough info on this website to diagnose and fix the bugger. Thanks for your help and suggestions in advance!
