Engine cuts out intermittently (long post) 200 1990

1990 240 DL 5 spd. After the second start of the day, after sitting for 8 hrs, after running fine for about 15 minutes the problem begins. Engine cuts out momentarily when opening throttle at RPMs < 3000. This usually gets worse and the engine stops completely and tach drops to 0 even if engine is being turned by the drivetrain. An immediate restart try without turning key off won't work. If I turn the key off then restart it will usually start. If I open the hood and wiggle every connector in sight then restart it will usually run OK for seconds to minutes then repeat. If in this condition I manage to get RPM above 3000 it will run fine. I suspect the crank position sensor but appreciate any help from the experts.
