Can you please answer for me a related question?

I am replacing the center link rod on my '69 144s. It rusted too badly inside the threads to allow toe adjustment and nobody had the correct Left Hand tap for chasing this thread.

I bought a used rod which is 1/2" shorter than mine and will be installing a new tie rod end on the driver's side, and the existing, still good, end on the right side.

I was told the toe adjustment is made by merely turning the rod (hence the existance of right hand and left hand threads). It occurs to me, therefore, that it is crucial to get the installation of the tie rod ends pretty even to help get the toe-in alignment done.

Once the rod is out of the car, the wheels are free to toe any way they wish, right?

My question is, how far in to I screw the tie rod ends to get the toe as close to zero as possible?

Also, how do I get the steering wheel straight?

I intend to give it about 1/16" negative toe when it's all said and done.
