Alternator in 240 Turbo 200

Got a guy who's desperate to sell me his '83 240 Turbo. According to him, it runs well but needs an alternator - and he's including a replacement alternator. So, I'm on a mission to prevent this one from going to salvage yard.

Problem is, the car is 20 miles away and I don't want to tow it. So, I can either replace the alternator onsite or drive it as far as the battery will last me. This is where I turn to the board for help :)

How far on a fresh battery can I drive a Volvo without a functional alternator? Or, how long should I budget to replace the alternator? On these turbos, looks like there is a lot blocking my access.

Any guidance is greatly appreciated. I thought I was going to enjoy being a one car household for a while, but no true fanatic can own only one Volvo.
