Intermittent air conditioning 200 1993

My A/C doesn't always work properly. It's nice and cold after the car has been sitting for a while, overnight, etc. When I restart the car after a short trip while the engine is still warm, the A/C tends not to work. There is always good air flow, it just doesn't cool. I've been thinking it is possibly a thermostat or coolant level issue. Does anyone have any thoughts on the matter? I would appreciate any help.
