Two green wires coming through radiator support 200 1987

On my 87 sedan I recently had to replace the crank pulley. I took out the air mass meter to get at the second lock-down nut on the A/C compressor. There are two green wires that come through the radiator support under the headlight and come next to the AMM with plastic in-line plugs on both. I unhooked one of them and can not figure out what it hooks back up to. The second one is still hooked up and connects to a wire that goes into the firewall pretty high up in the center. The car will not start back up but I do smell gas when I crank it to try. The two green wires are deteriorating badly. I want to find out what they go to and if they are keeping it from starting. Thanks, Eric
