Thanks for your interest and concerns.

I got the center link from Jay Johnson at Yankee Trading, a long-time Vintage Volvo Restoration shop. Jay said there were a lot of itterations of the 144 front steering , resulting in use of different sized center link rods. he assured me this rod is just fine -- the threads of the ends will merely stick out 1/4" more on each side.

I'll use your suggestions for setting toe, as best as it can be set.
