leaking air 900 1991

Hi all
91, 940SE has an air leaking sound under the glove box of passenger side. Upon the research of this site I found that it is related to AC. Yes my AC air stops coming through the vent upon accelration. It seems to be an expensive fix. I have the following questions:
1)Does it affects the engine performance as the vacuum leaks? The engine shakes badly at idle.
2)Is there anyway that I can set the vent to always blow from dash and disable the system from changing it to anyother position?
Thanks as always
Ram
