Battery Drain - Voltage Regulator 900 1993

93 940, 180K, non-turbo
For the past few months I have noticed that the battery in my 940 will not hold a charge for more than a week or so. The battery has been replaced and the alternator has been rebuilt by a local rebuilder. Recently the car was parked for 4 days. I had to jump start it to get it going. After driving for 11 minutes at highway speeds the engine quit while I was waiting at a traffic light. When I attempted to start the engine after it quit, the battery was COMPLETELY dead.
The alternator is obviously suspect here. My question: Can a faulty voltage regulator or alternator be a cause of a battery drain? Any other insights on locating and correcting a battery drain will be appreciated.
Thanks,
GP
