M46 wagon shifting problem 700 1991

Hello. I started having trouble shifting into 2nd gear about 2 weeks ago. It would go only if I pushed the shifting lever over hard to the left and then down. It has worsened quickly, and now affects 1st gear as well, though not quite as bad. I have to push the lever over as hard as I can now before it will go into those gears. The other gears and reverse are ok. Once in gear, everything works well. No noises, or other problems noted. I changed the fluid about 6 months ago and topped it up the other day, with no improvement.

I was hoping there was some slack in the linkage somewhere other than the clutch cable that could be tightened since the problem gears are on the same side.

This is my first transmission "adventure" so any ideas or tips are appreciated.
