Stuck in OD? 1800

I have had a problem with my J Type OD for some time. Often, the 1st time I shift into OD, it works fine. However, when I shift down and later want to use the OD, it does not engage. I also note that when this happens it almost appears that the OD is still engaged and wants to "functio" in second gear expecially and also in 3rd gear. Also, when I down shift to 1st gear, it "studders".

Today I noted that as long as I always sift out of OD into 4th and not from OD into 3rd gear, it will later engage when I flip the level.

I think I can live with this, but am curious as to what exactly is happening and how to eventually correct it.

Thanks for your help.
