A/C recharging and 406A 700 1991

What do you guys know about R-406A. Can I install it to top off R-12, or do I have to bleed down the system and install it like knew. Also, what is the procedure to recharge the a/c on my car (1991 745 NA) and where do I do this. Also what is the correct way to use the a/c manifold gauges. THanks for the info.
