Alternator Belt Replacement 200 1988

If not saving the AC belt, it can be cut off.

I often do not loosen the compressor- rather do a little trick jamming a screwdriver through the belt to walk it off the pulley. Remember the engine will turn clockwise when viewed from the front. This takes 2 people- one to observe the screwdriver position and one to bump the starter.

The alternator belts (there are 2 identical belts) install normally. If discarding old ones, cut them off, it's just easier.

If the belts run crooked, you may need new rubber bushings under the long bolt or adjuster bolt. These squish to one side and let the alternator twist in towards the block. New bushings are just a couple $$.

To reinstall that pain of an AC belt, reverse the procedure: put the belt 3/4 on, and hold it in place with a screwdriver. Bump the starter to walk the belt on. Be careful that the screwdriver will not catch you or fly out at you.

Good luck!
