loud engine: exhaust leak or engine problem? 200 1986

I revved the engine to 4000 RPM in first gear for the first time I can remember, and now the engine is cleary louder and I can smell the exhaust more. I checked for loose exhaust components and cracks in the pipes without lifting the car, but found nothing. Is there an easy way to check for a small leak? Also, could I have messed up the engine to cause the noise? I have no engine experience further than changing oil and belts.
