window regulator 700 1990

Well, I've had my windows and doors apart a few times. Where is the slack/slop? There should be no movement in the mounts from the arms into the metal window bracket. The slack is perpendicular (across the length) of the window. BUT - the arms should be free to slide parallel to the window. This is critical.

If your slack is in the X joint, I think you'd be best off replacing the regulator.

For further troubleshooting (if you have the 2-3 hours it could take you), you might take the regulator, window, and motor (electric motors) out of the car to check operation. It'll be awkward, but it will probably make it clear what the problem is.

I heard some person once say that people who own volvos will do 1 of 3 things with them:
1) Baby them - first noise they hear, dealership or shop
2) Brickboard and mechanic them
3) completely avoid all service and be as cheap as possible

After 232K miles, it became apparent that my Volvo's original owner was cheap and rolled the driver's window up and down endlessly. I assume that if he always rolled down the window he never used the AC (also evident from the headliner, heh) and was cheap on other things. So many times, in fact, that the GEARS on the motor had worn so far that they jammed and destroyed the drive gear.

If you get a makeup compact with a mirror from somewhere (dollar tree even) it will be very useful. You can see the motion. My guess is that some part is flexing at a joint rather than moving in the track. The tracks in the bracket should be lubricated and the metal pins should slide in plastic caps and be secured by c-clips.

Good Luck,
Will
