Observations on a 'T' grind cam in a NA B230F automatic 700

Hi everyone:

I wanted to share my experience with a cam swap on my '91 744 NA automatic car (Rex/Regina.) Of course, your experiences and preferences may vary...

I picked up a used "T" grind cam from a 740 turbo on Ebay (cheap!) and installed it this week. I am pleased with the results: very smooth idle, increased low end torque (noticeable off-idle to 3500 or so) and throttle response. For my driving purposes, it is a great match (stock 740 non turbo with an AW70L slushbox.) The butt dyno definitely sees a difference when compared to the "M" grind that came out. The extra low to mid range torque is helpful pulling hills with the automatic here in northeastern Pennsylvania.

For those with a stick shift, I would think that a warmer cam like a VX or an IPD turbo grind might be better suited and yield more dramatic results. AFAIK, an A, B or K grind from a 240 wouldn't work in this case unless you convert to a block mounted distributor since those cams don't have the slot.

All in all, I am pleased with the result especially since it was so inexpensive to perform. Nothing dramatic, but worth the effort IMHO - at least for my purpose.

Andrew S.
