M46 Transmission removal and repair question 700 1991

Hello,
This is a 91 turbo wagon with 330 000 km.
1st, 2nd gears became hard to engage without pulling the stick hard to the left, and now cannot be engaged at all, along with reverse.

I have ruled out a shifter linkage problem, so the trans. must come out for diagnosis and repair.

Any removal tips other than the FAQ or other maintenance items that should be done while the trans is out? I have already planned to replace the rear main oil seal.

Though I have never done any trans. work, I have the time and am willing to give at a whirl if it's doable by an experienced DIYer.

From the symptoms, any diagnostic theories on this trans and the repair needed?

thanks.
