To recap the problem. While I was out of town on a business trip a vacuum line came off the manifold. After a while the engine would not idle and I had to rev the engine up at every stop to keep it running. I opened the hood found the line and put it on but it still would not idle. After a little while the check engine light came on. 30 miles later it started idling ok, so I dove it 250 miles back home and pulled the codes. Got a 232 and a 113 both lean mixtures at idle codes.
Checked the voltages from the O2 Sensor. They were within a few tenths of what the manual and FAQ suggest they should be. Decided that the O@ sensor was OK for now. Tried to reset the computer. It would not reset. Finally disconnected the battery and let it clear.
After reconnecting the battery I finally got a 111 code (everything is OK) later today the same hose came off, no code no idle problem. I promptly put the hose back on and secured it with a Tywrap (too lazy to have done it first!)
Here is my interpretation of the event.
1. The computer will not alert immediately to a problem. When it finally does, it may react to the codes stored, rather than the actual problem. (It runs ok with the hose off except for a tendency to stall after quick acceleration and let off )(little burst of power to get around the corner)
2. After a while it may get better, it may not.
3. You must clear codes and recheck. If the computer won’t clear disconnect the ground, let it sit for a few minutes and check again make sure you have a 111 code or it is not clear. If the faults reset after the disconnect you then will have to deal with fixing the problem.
4. The important thing is to determine do I have a problem or is the computer reacting way behind the problem!
Think it out! Do not be too quick to leap to any conclusions try to find a way to check every theory!
