starter wont activate when hot

The starter on my 1990 740 recently failed to engage in a restaurant parking lot. It had been driven about 30 miles. Later when I returned to tow, it started up normally and worked perfectly for a couple of weeks and yesterday did it again. It had been driven in very hot Arizona weather. I have read messages here looking for an explanation. Does anyone know of or has anyone experienced this problem and actually solved it?
If not, please give me a list of options. Thanks
