Am I going to loose a front wheel? 200

Yesterday on a 140 mi.trip out of town in our 1986 245, my d.s. front wheel started making a low howling sound when I took a 360 highway ramp. Then it went away. Then it started coming back very lightly, especially if I push the steering a little to the left, while still going straight. As many of you would say, I thought of the wheel bearing, but I never dealt with that before. Is that an easy swap, or a very involved job? I didn't think it could be the break, although it could be anything if you ask me... I visually looked around the inside and the ball joint area, nothing I can't tell seems wrong. What about the shock absorber there?

Any of you guys had this happen to you?

Next weekend I am going on a 300+ mi. trip to Vermont, and back, taking the kids to camp. Is this very unsafe? I meant to have it looked at anyway tomorrow morning, but, if you rememnber my post of a month ago, my mechanic suddenly died the middle of May. So I am not sure if I can bring this to a generic garage, or that's even worse, in this case, if they don't know old bricks that well, and start blind guessing what's needed.

Thanks to all for your help.
