78 242 no start (long) 200

Picked up the 78 242 with B21 last week..it had been sitting for a little while and had almost no gas...we checked all fluids and tires, filled it up and it drove like a champ 60 miles on the highway...it has seen local use only since then...everything on the car is super clean, all hoses/lines/wiring, etc.. Everything was fine until yesterday.

Car all of a sudden turns over but will not fire. Did not hear pumps working...checked fuel pump relay, It was bad. In fact it was kind of charred in one area of the board, near the coil thingy.

-I couldn't find another one quickly so i decided to clean it up...I cleaned it and plugged it in without the cover. I noticed that the contacts close when turning the key from ON to START, contacts do not close until the starter is turning (is this normal?)...car started fine several times and I went for a drive. Next morning was the same all over again, no start and no relay action.

-Jumpered it with a Y cable (jumpered with open relay plogged in, with Y cable going between #30 and #87a & #87b)...both pumps working when jumped but car will not start.

I am getting a new relay but I am not confident that it will fix my no start condition because it did not start when jumpered....what else can I check?

Any help would be appreciated!
