700 temp gauge failure 700 1991

Thanks in advance to anyone who has a clue what's going on here.
My temp gaguge decided that it did not want to move from the far left position at all any more. Power is still going everywhere under the hood (i.e. temp gauge on top of radiator, coolant temp sensor) and the car seems to be running fine. I am hesitant to replace the coolant temp sensor if this is not the problem, I will if anyone else ever had this problem. IPD said it may be a failure of the circut board behind the gauge but that it's a hassle to change. Anyone had a problem like this before? Ohh yeah 283,000miles on the clock!
