Follow up: 1996 960 AM radio noise; clears up with brake depressed S90-V90 1996 S90-V90

Believe it or not, this problem turned out to be caused by the cell phone charger that was plugged into the cigarette lighter. My '91 740 exhibited the same symptom and fix (I discovered this by accident.) I just wanted to share this in case anyone else runs into this odd problem.

Hi everyone:

My Dad's '96 964 has a lot of electrical interference on the radio when tuned to AM stations. The strange thing is that the noise clears up when the brake pedal is depressed. Any thoughts/experiences that may shed some light on the cause of this? Keeping your foot on the brake while driving in order to listen to the radio isn't too good for pads and rotors... :P

Thanks,

Andrew S.

Check the antenna to body ground connection behind the trunk trim. The bulb-out sensor system is normally dormant but considering that the rear sensor is mounted right next to the power antenna motor (at least it was on earlier years), there may be a connection between the two.

Same noise with engine not running?

When the brake light switch is closed, as when the pedal is depressed, other things happen.

One is that the cruise control is disconnected. Have you put the car into and out of cruise and checked if the static is present/absent?

Also, the rear mounted bulb failure warning system (BFWS) relay gets into play, sending a single input from the brake light switch out in separate wires for each brake light. (My 1997 965 has two BFWS relays.)

If the BFWS relay is faulty, sort of buzzing while the brakes are not on, that might account for the static.

Good Luck,

Bob

Hi Bob:

As far as I can remember, the cruise control was not on. I'll tell him to try it with it on just to eliminate it as the cause. What you said about the BFWS relay makes sense - perhaps that is it...

Thanks,

Andrew S.
