740 turbo rough idle and stalling 700 1987

1987 740 Turbo wagon, 180K miles. The rough idle (can vary by 400 rpm) and stalling problem have been present more than 1 year. I had it to the Volvo dealer (for 4 days) and independent Volvo garage (for 3 days) and both were unable to identify the problem. Since then I have replaced the main (this had failed) and pre (in-tank) fuel pumps and fuel filter, replaced (and tested) the fuel pump relay, replaced the idle control motor, gapped and replaced the spark plugs, replaced the distributor and replaced the spark plug wire set. The vacuum hoses all seem to be intact. The only additional, unusual symptom is that the main fuel pump (old one and new one) strains and changes pitch as the idle RPM varies. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
