Modifying an 1800 1800

I have just had several exhanges with a couple of very knowledgeable people about making changes to an 1800 to improve performance (without sacrficing reliability). These exchanges are buried in another post, so I thought I would bring this discussion out and invite others to contribute their opinions. Seems there are some really fascinating possibilities. If you have ideas or done the work, please post so everyone benefits.
