A/C in my PV 444-544

Since I ran into a brick wall trying to install the clutch linkage (see previous post) I decided to work on installing the condenser for the A/C.

I purchased a new aluminum parallel flow condenser from Nostalgic Air - got the 19" x 11" unit - the smallest they had. There is very limited space between the radiator and the hood counterballence spring for a condenser to fit. As it turned out, the 19 x 11 is a bit big; it has mounting flanges that make the overall width about 21". Even if the condenser were a bit narrower there would be problems with the hood hinge hitting it. Installation is going to require I move the radiator aft (towards the engine) about 1/4" - this may prevent fitting a fan on the water pump. But that shouldn't cause a problem because there will be at least one electric pusher fan mounted in front of the condenser. Before it's installed I'll have to cut flanges & bore holes in the front cowl, along with having new mounting flanges welded onto the condenser. Probably sounds like a lot of work (and it is), but it sure will be worth it.

I'm toying with the idea of installing an in-dash evaporator that also has the heater coil. That way I could leave out the OEM heater, freeing up lots of space under the hood, and gain dehumidified defrost.

My neighbor's boy has a phone with a camera - I'll see if I can upload some images.
