The transmission problem sounds like you have a sticking lock up solenoid. Not sure from the information you provide. How many miles on the? Has the transmission fluid been replaced recently? Are you getting an up arrow flashing in the dash?
I would start by draining the refilling the transmission a few times with regular Dextron ATF over the span of a few hundred miles. This should renew the vast majority of fluid in the transmission. Also you can work through some of the diagnostics for the transmission found in this document.
