Got the 'new' 940 to start today, but alternator is acting weird 900

This is a new-to-me 1992 944 that I purchased cheap in a non-running condition, figuring I could fix it up. The one thing that the PO said was wrong with it (fuel pump) seemed to function just fine once I got it out of the tank :/ I replaced it anyway since I had it out. I got the new one reinstalled this morning. It did not start.

This afternoon, I messed around with the spark plugs and coil and got it to run poorly. After some stomping on the gas pedal enough to warm it up, the engine idled fine.

While it was running, the alternator was whining, and got hot really fast. I guess I need a new alternator... but just curious if it could be anything else such as short circuit/poor connection, or a bad battery causing this behavior?

Thanks.
