overheat/coolant issue

So, today when I was driving to work, I noticed my temp was rising suddenly. I was basically in the parking lot when this happened, so turned off the engine when I parked and rushed into work. I assumed it was just because of how hot it was outside (it's been 105+ lately). On the way home tonight (not that hot out...) it rose again, and I stopped the car, waited about 10 minutes and put coolant in (it was bone dry, but I hadn't checked it today..since we filled it before a small trip down to san diego on the 7th). Temp rose again on the way home, and I turned on the heater...only going 40 mph, just trying to make it home since it was midnight. I let the car cool, checked the oil and coolant again...oil was fine, coolant resevoir was again empty. There was fluid under the car, though not as much as I had put in. I checked to see if the oil was frothy (gasket?) and it didn't appear to be. I'm going to see if it's smoking in the morning...is it possible that the system was just so dry it's sucking it all up?

Any help would be appreciated...

My other 240 currently isn't starting (starter, I believe), so this is my only car right now.
