945t: Anybody ever have a flame trap holder melt shut? 900 1992

Yesterday my '92 945 started billowing smoke at idle and on deceleration. I was really puzzled because not long ago I replaced the flame trap holder (no flame trap on the turbos) with an aftermarket one from FCPgroton.com. I also cleaned all the lines and spent a great deal of time cleaning the oil separator box as well as possible. The flame trap holder only had a few thousand miles on it, having been replaced in early spring.

Once the car cooled down enough to work on it, I started looking for restrictions. The first place I looked was at the flame trap holder. It was completely clogged at the small nipple, which was a surprise. While pulling gently on the vacuum line attached to it, it broke off at its base. What was more surprising was that both ends of the big diameter part of the flame trap holder were almost completely obstructed because it had melted!

I was really surprised-- I had seen several badly clogged ones, but I have never seen one melt-- even in cars with obvious signs of overheating at the boneyard.

Has anyone else seen this before?

An additional complication was that the CBV diaphragm had a hole in it, resulting in oil being pulled from the turbo directly into the intake manifold.

I am interested to hear whether anyone else has encountered this problem-- the smoking and leaking at the seals came on very quickly!
