Timing gear trouble. 444-544

Trying to get my new acquisition (1964 – 544) ship shape I took a look at the timing gears. The large fiber one looked relatively new but had 3 cracks running from the inside shaft to the holes used to pull it. I replaced with new aluminum/steel Cloyes set from Rock Auto. Within 1 minute of reassembly & running – major noise. Teeth on big gear are chipped. Yes, I installed correctly (I’ve done this successfully in the past) - timing marks were lined up. There is about 3/16 play in the shaft. I’m thinking that the Cam Shaft must be bent. Any thoughts?
