my trusty dusty yellow wagon started shaking about a month ago. only on deceleration. a really pronounced vibration passes through the whole car, starting at 20-25 mph and down to 10.
the severity is proportional to the rate of deceleration and how much i'm having to decel. it occurs when i'm using the brakes or engine braking (5 spd man 4th to 2nd at 50 mph).
took a mechanic for a ride. we were chatting along about volvo's, and how tough they were, then i hit my brakes. his countenance changed from mildly confident to totally at a loss. "never seen that happen before". he's got 30 yrs experience.
i've replaced brakes, wheels, tires and shocks. no visible failure to any of the bushings. nothing is obviously loose.
another mechanic suggested i put it in the air, start it and watch every thing turn.
i did that.
i noticed that as the drive shaft went round and round the differential went up and down. about 4 to 6 inches of up and down motion. some how that doesn't seem normal.
would it be the drive saft it's self being out of balance, the universals locking up or the center support??????
i've bought a mercedes. i might just go get another.
