head gasket replacement 200

I just picked up an '84 240 with 66 K original miles. The PO just traded it on a new XC 70. I work at a Volvo dealership in the summer when I'm off from school. Anyway, this one lost its coolant and overheated. She said that the gauge didn't go all the way up before she got it stopped. The techs gave her an estimate and said that it definately needed a head gasket. The oil looks clean still, so I think another head (or maybe use this one), gasket, and bolt set should get it going again.

What usually happens to these red blocks when they over heat?

Thanks in advance.
Dave
